Solution-focused Psychotherapy

What is solution focused psychotherapy and how does it work?

Solution focused psychotherapy focuses on what the client wants to achieve and there is less concentration on the past. Typically, the client looks at questions such as "What would it be like for you if you no longer had this problem?" and "How would you notice?".

Solution focused psychotherapy is rather more pragmatic than traditional psychotherapy - although many similar techniques are used. Coping with and managing difficulties are examined. It is likely to be more motivational than depth psychology.

Solution focused psychotherapy is usually fairly brief and it's likely that clients will feel the benefits quite quickly compared to in-depth work. It is probably unsuitable for deep-seated problems which have lasted many years.
